Reading at Night

Now that have have entered January it is time to add the additional leveled reader to your child’s yellow book bag! These books are a part of the Reading A-Z leveling system that other Archway Academies have used and found success. You can check out the website here if you’re interested in learning more. Your child will likely come from with a book leveled AA, A, or possibly B with the goal of them reaching level E by the end of kindergarten for a successful transition to 1st grade.  These books are repetitive, have picture support but also feature words that are less decodable than their current readers so your child will likely need more support.

Our classroom only has one copy of each story so to keep our books in good shape we put them inside of a zip-lock bag. Please only take the book out to practice reading and then put it back inside the zip-lock and inside the yellow book bag. Keep it away from food, drink and younger siblings while reading :) . We will assess your child’s ability to read this book each Wednesday. If they are able to read it with confidence and few mistakes, we will give them a new one to practice. If not, they will need to continue practicing until we check books again the next week.

Please make sure you are still spending at least 15 minutes each night practicing both these books. I would start with the paper book since it is shorter then move on to your child’s other book. Find what works best with your child but make sure both books get exposure each day.
